Occupation: R.N. in a cardiac catheterization lab (Mt. Sinai in Harlem, NYC)

Currently: Working on her masters at NYU to be a LPN

We were married on 6/30/2004.

Christy grew up in a little town in Maryland called Cumberland, the origin of the C & O Canal. Having grown up in a little Presbyterian church, Christy was ready to spread her wings. Having read about Calvin College in a Christian colleges magazine, Christy and her mother drove to Calvin to check out the campus. Christy was impressed by size of the school as well as the abundance of opportunities available. She enrolled in 2000. During her second week of classes, she met Ben. Ben was in his second year at Calvin, struggling to determine his calling. Ben had grown up in Japan, the son of missionaries Larry and Ruth Spalink. After Ben graduated from high school in Japan, he applied to a variety different colleges and universities, but realized that Calvin offered the best deal. Soon after Ben and Christy met, Ben determined that God was calling him to be a pastor. Christy put Ben through seminary (literally) working at a hospital in Grand Rapids while Ben finished his studies. During seminary, Ben and Christy were assessed by Home Missions and encouraged to pursue ministry in church planting.

THE WORK:   An opportunity arose in New York while Ben and Christy were on internship working at a wonderful church in New Jersey (Bridgeway Community Church) and Ben and Christy moved into Lower Manhattan (one block from Ground Zero) in August of 2007. There they are working with Steve and Dana Wolma to establish a new Christian community to help transform the culture of New York City.
